My sister’s skin was looking really good. Like, annoyingly good. Not “you’ve got a nice moisturiser on” good. Her skin had that fresh, plump, ridiculously hydrated look that makes you immediately start analysing someone’s face for clues. So naturally, I asked her what she’d changed.
Her answer? “I bought this mask.” She showed me the Medicube Collagen Night Wrapping Mask. I’d never heard of it, which she found almost offensive. She looked at me like I’d just announced that I’d never heard of the internet.
“What rock have you been living under?”
Apparently, this thing was all over social media. And if there’s one thing you should know about me, it’s that I love trying new beauty products. Do I occasionally get sucked into the hype? Absolutely. Am I proud of it? Not particularly.
Did this product escape the hype? Absolutely not.
The Friday Night Beauty Rabbit Hole
This conversation happened over our usual Friday night dinner. My sister and I have dinner together pretty much every Friday at our local pizza place, which is honestly one of my favourite ways to start the weekend. Pizza, wine, sister and a full debrief on everyone’s lives. It’s basically therapy, except with carbs.
That evening, I went home and immediately looked up the mask because apparently I have absolutely no ability to casually research a beauty product. I started reading reviews, then watching videos, then reading more reviews. Then I moved on to before-and-afters and watched someone apply it while explaining why their skin looked like glass.
At some point, I was sitting on my bed putting my son to sleep while simultaneously conducting what can only be described as a full-scale investigation into a Korean skincare product. One hour later, I had it in my Takealot basket. And then… Takealot offered me R200 off if I bought it before midnight. Well, if that isn’t the universe telling me to buy a skincare product, I don’t know what is. I didn’t hesitate. Into the basket it went. Because apparently the universe speaks in discount codes.
My First Night With the Mask
I was ridiculously excited when it arrived. This was no longer just a skincare product. This was ‘The Product‘ – the thing that was apparently going to give me my sister’s skin.
I followed my normal evening skincare routine first: serums, cream and the usual collection of things I’ve accumulated in my quest to keep my face looking like it still belongs to me. Then came the Medicube mask.
It’s a thick, gel-like substance that you apply as the final layer over your skincare. Medicube recommends applying an even layer after the rest of your routine, avoiding your eyes, lips, eyebrows and hairline, and letting it dry for around 15 minutes before going to bed.
And then you’re supposed to sleep in it. Excuse me? Sleep in it? This was the part I wasn’t entirely convinced about. I already battle to sleep, so if there’s a label in my pyjamas that’s slightly itchy, I will lie awake thinking about it for three hours. The idea of deliberately covering my face in a layer of gel and then expecting myself to sleep peacefully seemed… ambitious.
But I’d come this far. I applied it. And waited.
The Surprisingly Good Part
Once it dried, I barely noticed it. This genuinely surprised me. I expected to feel like my face had been shrink-wrapped, but once the mask had dried properly, it just felt like a very thin, slightly tight layer sitting on my skin.
The trick, I’ve discovered, is letting it dry properly before you go to bed. Don’t rush this part. Medicube says it should feel completely dry to the touch without any residue before you sleep, and they’re right.
Once it was dry, I completely forgot I was wearing it. I went to bed. And somehow… I slept. No itchy face, no dramatic peeling onto my pillow and no waking up at 2am convinced I’d accidentally glued my face to the duvet. Nothing.
Morning Me Was Confused
When I woke up, I honestly expected most of the mask to have disappeared. But it was still there, mostly. There was a little lifting around the corners of my nose, but otherwise it had stayed surprisingly well.
And this is where I made my first rookie mistake. I thought I had to peel it off. So I did. Or at least, I attempted to.
The Great Morning Peel
If you’ve got plenty of time in the morning, peeling this mask off is actually quite satisfying. But if you’re trying to get yourself ready, get children dressed, find missing shoes, make coffee and generally get everyone out of the house without losing your mind, it’s not exactly a relaxing spa experience.
The mask doesn’t necessarily come off in one satisfying piece, particularly if you’ve applied it quite thinly. Instead, you can end up with lots of tiny pieces. Lots. And your kids may get slightly concerned while watching you peel your face off.
So there I was in the morning, trying to remove my skincare mask while simultaneously thinking about everything else I needed to do. And then I discovered something even more unfortunate: if you don’t remove all of it properly, you may spend the rest of the day discovering little pieces of face mask in places you absolutely did not intend them to be.
Around your hair. Dangling from your neck. Possibly somewhere on your face where you don’t notice it until someone else does.
There is nothing quite like being in public and suddenly wondering: “Is that a piece of skincare hanging off my cheek?”
Spoiler: It probably is.
Then My Sister Told Me I Could Just Wash It Off
This was a game changer because apparently, I had been making my life unnecessarily difficult.
Medicube actually gives you two removal options: you can peel the dried mask away from the edges, or rinse it off thoroughly with lukewarm water. Why did nobody tell me this?
Once I started washing it off in the morning, the whole experience became significantly easier. No tiny pieces dangling off my face looking like dodgy skin shed, and no discovering half a mask in my hair at lunchtime. Just wash it off and carry on with your day.
Honestly, this single piece of information probably increased my love for the product by about 40%.
And Then I Looked in the Mirror
This is the part that made me understand why my sister was so excited about it. My skin looked really good.
Not “I’ve been using this for six months and maybe my collagen has increased” good. I’m talking about the immediate result. My skin looked plumper, smoother, hydrated and glowy. It just looked… better.
It had that healthy, fresh look that I hadn’t seen on my skin in a while. The kind of glow where you look in the mirror and think: “Okay. What happened here?”
And because I’d been using it overnight, I could actually see the difference the next morning. That immediate result is what really sold me.
Does It Actually Do Anything Long Term?
This is where I’m going to be a little more cautious. I definitely noticed the immediate effects, but the longer-term benefits haven’t been nearly as dramatic for me. And I think that’s important to say.
I don’t want this to become one of those skincare reviews where I use something for a few weeks and suddenly claim it has completely transformed my skin. I don’t think it has.
What I do think it does incredibly well is hydration. The formula contains ingredients including glycerin, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, ceramide NP, vitamin E and collagen extract. Medicube describes the product as targeting hydration, elasticity and radiance.
And that makes sense when you actually use it. You’re applying your usual skincare first and then putting this wrapping layer over everything, so rather than thinking of it as some magical collagen mask that’s going to rebuild your face overnight, I think of it more as a final sealing layer that helps create a hydrated environment while you sleep.
And that is particularly appealing in winter.
This Is My Winter Skincare Secret
If you live somewhere where winter turns your skin into a dry, slightly irritated version of itself, you’ll understand this. Cold air, dry indoor heating, wind and hot showers can leave your skin feeling like your beautifully layered skincare routine has evaporated before you’ve even made it to lunch.
That’s where I think this mask really shines.
Medicube says the mask can be used around 3–4 times a week and that daily use can be particularly beneficial during dry seasons or winter. And I completely understand why.
It’s not just about adding another hydrating product. It’s about putting something over your skincare that stays there while you sleep — almost like giving your evening skincare routine a little protective blanket.
Which sounds much more sophisticated than: “I put jelly on my face and went to bed.”
The Beauty Product Hype Was Actually Right
This doesn’t happen very often. I’m usually quite suspicious when something suddenly appears absolutely everywhere on social media because, let’s be honest, social media has convinced me to buy some questionable things over the years.
Some were brilliant. Some were… educational. But in this case? I actually understand the hype. I can see why people love it. It’s easy to use, you don’t need to sit around for an hour waiting for a sheet mask to finish, you can sleep in it and, once it’s properly dry, it doesn’t feel particularly uncomfortable.
Most importantly for me, the next-morning result is genuinely noticeable.
Would I Buy It Again?
Yes. Actually, this is one of those products where I finished my first experience thinking: “Okay, I understand why my sister was so smug about her skin.”
Would I tell you it permanently transformed my skin? No. Would I tell you it rebuilt my collagen overnight? Also no. Would I tell you to expect to wake up looking ten years younger? Absolutely not. But if you have an event the next day, your skin is looking tired, dull or dehydrated, or you simply want that really good “my skin is having a good day” look, I would absolutely reach for this.
For me, the biggest benefit is the immediate glow. It’s one of those products where you use it at night and the next morning you actually notice something. And honestly? Those are my favourite kinds of beauty products.
Because sometimes I don’t need a six-month clinical study to tell me whether I like something. Sometimes I just need to look in the mirror at 7am and think: “Well… hello.”
And if my sister hadn’t introduced me to it over pizza on a Friday night, I probably wouldn’t have tried it. Which means I owe her dinner. Although, given that she is the reason I now have another skincare product in my bathroom… Maybe she owes me.
My Final Verdict
Immediate glow: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Hydration: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Ease of use: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
Long-term transformation: ⭐⭐⭐☆☆
Likelihood I’ll keep using it: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Medicube Collagen Night Wrapping Mask isn’t going to stop me ageing. And frankly, I’m okay with that. I’m 40-something. I’m not trying to look 25. I’m trying to make the skin I’ve got look as good as it possibly can.
And this mask? It makes it look really good the next morning. That’s enough for me.
